MODELING DESIGN PROCESS

Model 3 experiencing 

-tried to add some platform, to create experiences from inside to outside

-keep roof flat, roof garden. Could make the build integrate into the landscape, the building can be a part of the landscape

also roof garden open for public, so some ramp and stairs toward to roof top.

in last week i was thinking to have roof garden in my building

and the roof garden open for public

combine building and landscape

make the landscape climb up to the building 

people from the street can cross landscape to get river side without enter the building

To make the bottom of hills useful, some part of building can be built under hills

Riverside Design

Examples

 Walkway along the river, for people hanging around the site
Seating provide on river side, like stairs, benches, people can seat near the river have nice afternoon

Extend walkway allow visitors experience the rive in different position

people could feel closer to river, indirect connection with people who are in the ferry or canoe

-city ferry - public transport, travel between Gowanus and New York 

-canoe launch for visitors and residents, can rent canoes from field station 

-walkway along the riverside for visitors look out

-seating, shading

Inertial space organize

workshop: combine artists workshop and residents workshop, so visitors can see how artist work and look artists' work. Also artist can open some workshops for public. 

library: between entry and auditorium, the library also combine with opening auditorium, the opening auditorium is create by a stage and some stairs , a glass wall divided the space into library and auditorium. so when there is no performance, people can use the space as a reading or studying space.

auditorium: two auditoriums, the open one is part of library, the moral formal one is in the middle of the building, between library and exhibition. reception for buy tickets, change room and control room, can contain 200 people.

the space under auditorium can use as toilet, cafe. this is the best view from the building when people sit there, because it faces to the river and ,sunlight from the northeast. 

exhibition: second entry is to access to the exhibition room. two function of the exhibition room. One is a large open one, can display big objects or hold parties. The other one is divide into several small space, can display different topics.

Suggestion from tutor

- brake the boundary of each space, make them integrate into each other

-don't restrict by the form of the building

-think about what i am going to do with roof

Library Example

combine library and open auditorium room together

library: between entry and auditorium, the library also combine with opening auditorium, the opening auditorium is create by a stage and some stairs , a glass wall divided the space into library and auditorium. so when there is no performance, people can use the space as a reading or studying space.

The site is very big, to built a 5000m2 field sation i'm thing to start with landscape of the site

Elements of landscape on the site

1. create green on my site, as Gowanus lack of green space

2. create a public open space, as Gowanus doesn't have much open space

3. create small hills on the site, to make strong contrast with flat Gowanus 

4. create different height allow visitors to explore and experience various views of canal and Gowanus

5. make holes under hills, i don't these hills to block the view of canal for the people from the street.

the reason to make hill is to make canal and field station visible from the street

Linear shape building

as the site is building big, and i don't want to separate  my building

to due with these issues, i think my building has to be linear

How people entry my building?

one entry :

enter from the middle of the building, so people don't have to travel long distance to get other part of the building

 

two entry:

two entry from the two sides of the site which are near the most public transportation stop including bus stop, subway station and also bike spot (design in assignment 1).

instead of one entry, two entries are more visible and easier to find 

Form of the field station

• curve shape to reflect the hilly landscape design

• courtyard is necessary, connect inside and outside the building

people inside of the building can see what is happening outside, could see people play or hold even in courtyard and also can see people rowing canoe on the canal
'U' shape to create courtyard

• elevate some part of building to create views of canal for people on street or on the site
• sky light on the elevate part, let light come into the bottom part.
